Sciyo introduces a new model of open access academic publishing
Authors publishing with Sciyo in 2010 will be the first in academic publishing to receive royalties based on the number of downloads of their publication. For every 10 downloads, 0.2 euro will be accredited to author’s account on an annual basis. The aim of the model is to reward high quality academic work, deemed most useful by the research community.
Sciyo operates under the open access publishing model, replacing subscription fees with publication fees paid by the authors or their funders. All Sciyo’s publications are available online and free to view, download, print, copy and share under Creative Commons Attribution License and without sign up, which increases their visibility and citation rates.
Author royalties will be accredited directly to the author's account, with the exception of royalties under 100 euro, which will be deducted from the author's publishing fee head on the next time he or she decides to publish with Sciyo.
Sciyo's publishing fee of 470 euro is among the lowest in the open access publishing industry. Author royalties will additionally decrease this fee and allow Sciyo to take the first step towards creating new streams of revenue and building a “free for all” business model – free for the authors as well as the end users of the published research outputs.
Over the previous year, Sciyo's publications have received over 720 000 downloads. Since the company's publishing platform expects a rapid growth in 2010, the number of downloads is expected to increase accordingly. To take full advantage of the incentive and maximize the number of downloads, each author will receive a comprehensive information pack prior to online publication outlining strategies they can use to promote their work.
Sciyo is the world's first open access publishing and community platform, providing free online access to its peer reviewed scientific books and journals, as well as science-related online videos.
All scientific literature available at sciyo.com is free to view, download, copy, print and share. Publishing authors are able to extend their work with multimedia at any point free of charge, and highlight their work with video, audio, PowerPoint and PDF. Sciyo also hosts an online community where researchers can connect, discuss research findings and share ideas.

About open access publishing
Open access academic literature is made immediately and permanently available online, free of charge and without any copyright restrictions other than attribution of source and authorship. There are no price or permission barriers for the readers. Open access increases the visibility and the citation rates of academic publications, enables researchers across the developing world to keep up with cutting-edge research and alleviates the pressure on university library budgets.
