The Code4Lib Journal [ http://journal.code4lib.org/ ] is accepting proposals
for articles, book & software reviews, code snippets & algorithms,
conference reports, opinion pieces, etc., for its September issue. The
Code4Lib Journal strives to fill a communication niche above simple
description of software implementations but below pure theoretical digital
library investigation. The editorial committee is looking for content that
is practical, demonstrates how to exploit technology to create digital
library collections and services, or offers insight and forethought
Ordered by Congress to re-open its shuttered libraries, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is grudgingly allocating only minimal space and resources, according to agency documents released today by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER). At the same time, EPA is issuing a series of edicts placing virtually every aspect of library operations under centralized control of a political appointee.
OCLC and Google Inc. have signed an agreement to exchange data that will facilitate the discovery of library collections through Google search services.
Under terms of the agreement, OCLC member libraries participating in the Google Book Search™ program, which makes the full text of more than one million books searchable, may share their WorldCat-derived MARC records with Google to better facilitate discovery of library collections through Google.
With the support of Kirtas' Canadian reseller Ristech, McMaster
University will be using the Kirtas APT BookScan 2400RA to digitize rare,
out-of-print books. Once the books are digitized and processed, files will
be made available to the world on the Internet through the university
library and for sale as print-on-demand books on Lulu.com.
"We have significant collections that we would like to make more widely
accessible through digitization," said Jeffrey Trzeciak, University
Librarian at McMaster University. "The digitization technology provided by
The International Internet Preservation Consortium (IIPC) has
established a new mailing list for web curators and other practitioners
interested in sharing information and experiences about web harvesting
issues and associated quality review and archival issues.
The mailing list will focus on curator tools for harvesting web
material, using web archives, working with archived material, and
accessing harvested material. Topics of interest could include:

Save the dates for the eighth annual West Texas Book and Music Festival, September 23-27, 2008 at the Abilene Civic Center in Abilene, Texas. Dr. Don B. Graham, a distinguished writer and teacher specializing in Texas and Southwest literature, will be the 2008 recipient of the A. C. Greene Award to be presented at the West Texas Book & Music Festival on Sept. 27.
Graham is the J. Frank Dobie Regents Professor at the University of Texas at Austin and is a writer-at-large for Texas Monthly magazine.
ATLANTA, Ga. - The Great American Bargain Book Show, scheduled for the Cobb Galleria Center in Atlanta on Friday-Saturday, August 1-2, has already sold 350 tables, according to Cathie Eargle, show co-coordinator.
The Great American Bargain Book Show debuted at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta in 2008. It is now among the three largest remainder and bargain book shows in the nation.
Random House has bought Watson-Guptill Publications, the art instruction, craft, photography and reference book publisher, from Nielsen Business Media. Watson-Guptill will become an imprint in Random's Crown Publishing Group. Staff will relocated to Random House headquarters in New York City later this month. Sales and distribution for Watson-Guptill will continue to be provided by Macmillan "for the foreseeable future."
