LibLime Announces Galen Charlton Promotion to VP, Research and Development
ATHENS, OH--August 5, 2008--LibLime, the leader in open-source solutions for libraries, announced today that Galen Charlton has been promoted to VP Research and Development.
Galen previously held the title of Senior Software Engineer. Galen joined LibLime from Ex Libris (formerly Endeavor), where he specialized in ILS and ERMS migrations for the last nine years. Galen has a proven track record in the library automation industry and has worked with over two hundred libraries to perform timely and successful migrations for ILS, electronic resource management, and digital collection management products.
Galen is excited about his new role in facilitating LibLime's development contributions to library open-source software. He says, "I look forward to working with my team members, LibLime's library partners, and the Koha community to make Koha an even better tool for patrons and librarians."
Development of an open-source ILS should be a true collaboration, and Galen's role is not just to enhance the software, but to expand the community: "One of the beauties of the open-source model is that the user can become the developer," Galen continues. "My goal is to help our customers participate directly in the Koha project, thus reinforcing the idea that libraries and their patrons should hold the true ownership of their tools."
"Galen's talent and experience have proven invaluable; we're very glad to see him advance to take on this new challenge," said Joshua Ferraro, LibLime's CEO. "In his new role, Galen will be coordinating the efforts of the growing LibLime development team. His proven management skills and experience working on software for libraries will continue to be invaluable to LibLime and our customers."
About LibLime's Software Development Practices
LibLime operates on an open-source business model where the development process is steered by a community, rather than a vendor. LibLime customers take full advantage of this model by sponsoring enhancements that are then shared with the whole community. The result is very rapid development cycles, customer-driven features and a high overall Return on Investment.
Software that LibLime creates using this model is widely available at no cost, which leads to the misconception that the company "sells free software". LibLime sells services (e.g., hosting, installation, data migration, development, training and maintenance) that help facilitate the open-source process for libraries.
