The Research Society for Victorian Periodicals is very pleased to award the annual Robert Colby Scholarly Book Prize for a scholarly book that most advances the understanding of the nineteenth-century British newspaper and/or periodical press. All books exploring periodicals of the period are eligible (including single-author monographs, edited collections, and editions) as long as they have a publication date of 2008. The winner will receive a plaque and a monetary award of up to $3,000, and will be invited to speak at the RSVP conference at the University of St.

ALA's Advocacy Institute, entitled "Making our Voices Heard," will take
place from 1 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18. The workshop will offer
advocacy essentials such as message development and coalition building
and offers a valuable opportunity to network and share ideas with
library advocates who work to meet the information needs of the Latino
community. Attendees will leave with the tools necessary to become
better advocates for their bilingual and multicultural communities and

OCLC was awarded a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to explore attitudes and perceptions about library funding and to evaluate the potential of a large-scale marketing and advocacy campaign to increase public library funding in the U.S. The findings of this research are now available in the latest OCLC report, From Awareness to Funding: A study of library support in America.

In partnership with the National e-Science Centre and supported by the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) we are holding our 4th International Digital Curation Conference on 1-3 December 2008 at the Hilton Edinburgh Grosvenor hotel in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The Portable Document Format (PDF), undeniably one of the most commonly used formats for electronic documents, is now accessible as an ISO International Standard - ISO 32000-1. This move follows a decision by Adobe Systems Incorporated, original developer and copyright owner of the format, to relinquish control to ISO, who is now in charge of publishing the specifications for the current version (1.7) and for updating and developing future versions.

The display highlights a State Department "Intelligence Brief" noting
remarks made by Chinese Premier Chou En-lai to the U.S. table tennis team
during their visit to China. The Premier emphasized the "new page" in the
relationship between the United States and China with the adoption of a
"people's diplomacy." The display also includes a picture of the U.S. table
tennis team at the Great Wall of China in April 1971.
