Spain’s University of Zaragoza Adopts the FOLIO Library Services Platform
~ The First FOLIO Library in Spain Will Begin Implementation with EBSCO Information Services and IBAI-SCANBIT ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — January 21, 2021 — University of Zaragoza (UNIZAR) is the first library in Spain to choose FOLIO as its Library Services Platform (LSP) with hosting services from EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO). The implementation project will be led by IBAI-SCANBIT Technology and Services (IBAI-SCANBIT) who has partnered with EBSCO for library implementation in Spain and will be completed in the spring of 2021.

This transition to FOLIO will provide UNIZAR with a more efficient management system for its printed and electronic resources. The University of Zaragoza Library is currently working on the transition to cloud storage, freeing up resources to focus on implementation.

UNIZAR Library Director, Ramón Abad, says that the implementation of open source technology "is highly valued by IT staff and will allow for more personalized adjustments and developments tailored to our needs." About this pioneer installation of FOLIO, supported by IBAI-SCANBIT and EBSCO, he says that "the installation of FOLIO will provide great visibility to the University of Zaragoza Library, which could become a reference for the Spanish library world."

IBAI-SCANBIT’s CEO Iñigo Lapitz says that the partnership agreement with EBSCO offers the Spanish market a strong option for implementation. “We believe that the implementation of FOLIO at the University of Zaragoza will be a reference for many institutions that have not yet found a solution to their library management challenges.”

IBAI-SCANBIT and EBSCO announced their partnership in 2019 to support local libraries in Spain adopting FOLIO. SCANBIT has specialized in library automation for more than 25 years and is committed to the philosophy of open software. The partnership combines EBSCO's hosting capabilities as well as the implementation expertise and local service support provided by IBAI-SCANBIT.

IPSWICH, Mass. — January 20, 2021 — Submissions are now open for the 2021 EBSCO Solar grant program from EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO). For the fifth year, EBSCO is accepting applications for grants that will fund solar installations at libraries around the world. As part of the 2021 EBSCO Solar initiative, EBSCO will be making a total of $200,000 in grants available.

The grants will help winning libraries to reduce their utilities expenses by installing solar arrays. EBSCO introduced the EBSCO Solar grant program in 2016 and has given libraries more than one million dollars in grants.

In 2020, EBSCO received more than 90 submissions from libraries in 18 countries. H. The EBSCO Solar webpage at www.ebsco.com/solar includes details such as the timeline, where to submit questions, a link to the submission form and FAQs. OCLC’s Capira mobile library services recognized with 2021 Modern Library Awards

LISWire - Fri, 01/15/2021 - 17:03

DUBLIN, Ohio, 14 January 2021—OCLC’s CapiraMobile and CapiraCurbside—mobile library services that offer flexibility, choice, and convenience for libraries and their users—have been recognized with LibraryWorks’ 2021 Modern Library Awards.

CapiraMobile, a platinum Modern Library Award (MLA) winner for the second consecutive year, makes it possible for users to interact with their library through their mobile phones, making collections, events, and programs available anywhere, anytime.

CapiraCurbside, which received a silver MLA, makes it easy for libraries to connect users with physical library materials without the need to enter the building. This solution seamlessly integrates with library systems as well as Capira’s mobile apps and allows libraries to communicate with users about when materials are ready and how to pick them up.

“These mobile services extend the reach of libraries to offer a variety of options as they seek to interact in new and different ways during difficult and changing times,” said Bart Murphy, OCLC’s Chief Technology and Information Officer. “Like many industries, libraries are developing new processes as they adapt to circumstances around the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of these changes will continue well beyond when libraries reopen their buildings. Capira mobile solutions offer flexibility to help libraries discover new and better ways to serve their communities—now and in the future.”

These mobile services were envisioned long before the pandemic resulted in library closings, and they continue to be enhanced as the needs of libraries and their users evolve.

“Capira services focus on making library services easy and convenient to use through mobile technologies,” Murphy continued. “What was considered convenient a year ago has become essential today to help find the best ways to reach and engage with library users. We’re grateful to our customers and to LibraryWorks for this recognition and award.”

The Modern Library Awards were created to recognize the top products and services in the library industry in a truly unbiased format. Products and services were submitted in the fall of 2020. Submissions were batched into small groups and sent to the LibraryWorks database of more than 80,000 librarians at public, K-12, academic, and special libraries. Only customers with experience with these products/services in their facilities were permitted to judge, resulting in an unbiased score. Each judge scored the product on a numeric basis from 1-10 on a series of questions regarding functionality, value, customer service, etc.

About LibraryWorks
LibraryWorks helps administrators to make informed decisions about library technology, automation and software, collection development and management, facilities and furnishings, staffing, purchasing, and other areas that drive effective strategic planning and day-to-day operations. Our family of resources can enable you to identify best practices, monitor trends, evaluate new products and services, apply for grants and funding, post or find a job, and even enjoy some library humor.

About the Modern Library Awards program
The Modern Library Awards (MLAs) is a program designed to recognize elite products and services in the library market which can help library management personnel enhance the quality-of-experience for the library user and increase the performance of their library systems.

About OCLC
OCLC is a nonprofit global library cooperative providing shared technology services, original research and community programs so that libraries can better fuel learning, research and innovation. Through OCLC, member libraries cooperatively produce and maintain WorldCat, the most comprehensive global network of data about library collections and services.
