FOLIO Community Expands with the Addition of Jisc

Tue, 10/31/2017 - 11:52

United Kingdom digital technologies leader to join the FOLIO project

WILMINGTON, Delaware — October 31, 2017 — FOLIO, a community collaboration to develop an open source Library Services Platform (LSP), has today announced a partnership with Jisc, the United Kingdom’s leader in digital technologies for education and research. Jisc will bring their expertise to the project while looking to leverage FOLIO’s technologies in their own projects where appropriate.

Jisc’s Head of Library Analytics Services, Ross MacIntyre, said, “Jisc is interested in being directly involved with FOLIO to contribute to its innovative efforts to shape the future of libraries. As a champion of the future of digital technologies, we believe that FOLIO is an important initiative for libraries. We are in favour of increasing the choice available to our members and would like to see more competition in the library management system marketplace. We welcome an open and community-driven approach to developing services for libraries, and we appreciate the efforts of the global FOLIO Community to solve problems of need and scale.”

Since being introduced in June 2016, FOLIO has gained significant backing from libraries looking to use it to run their libraries. By having the financial backing of large organizations, and by leveraging the Apache v2 license, libraries understand that FOLIO is a long-term, open solution to their ILS/LSP needs. FOLIO is being designed to meet the current needs of libraries while also providing a platform ecosystem that will allow for growth and innovation beyond traditional library workflows.

Because FOLIO will allow for libraries to run the platform themselves or rely on hosting and support from vendor partners and consortia, FOLIO will be able to meet the needs of libraries of all sizes and expand the adoption of open source solutions beyond libraries with large technical staffs. This new business model means libraries are not locked into a single vendor offering a monolithic option. Instead, choice is increased and budgetary savings can be realized because libraries can choose from the various apps provided by current service providers, library consortia or new players interested in innovating in the library space. FOLIO is designed with a microservices architecture which ensures that legacy issues don’t slow down future development, as no part of the project will be too big to replace.

How to Join the Community

Community members may participate in a variety of ways, by contributing their knowledge of specific workflows and functional areas, contributing their vision of how library technology must evolve in the years to come, contributing code, and helping to build out applications for the new extensible platform.

Interested participants can sign up at www.folio.org and click on GET INVOLVED to join the community and take part in FOLIO, including future FOLIO Days and conference presentations around the world.

About FOLIO

FOLIO is a collaborative effort among libraries, vendors, developers and consortia that leverages open source technology and a community-based effort to redefine library services and innovate based on library futures. By building on what libraries need and by leveraging library expertise as well as vendor capacity and velocity, FOLIO is designed to move libraries forward, build on the services they provide and redefine the role libraries play within their institution. FOLIO also levels the playing field and makes open source technology available to all institutions regardless of size or staffing. FOLIO brings vendors together to innovate and host services for customers and introduces open source as a service to libraries. To sign up to participate or receive more information go to www.folio.org.

Submissions Now Open for the 2018 SEE-IT™ Award from EBSCO Information Services

Tue, 10/17/2017 - 14:45

~ Annual Award Recognizes Author and Illustrator Excellence in Youth Graphic Novels ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — October 17, 2017 — Submissions are now being accepted for the second annual SEE-IT™ Award. SEE-IT stands for Stories Engagingly Expressed-Illustratively Told. The SEE-IT Award is an annual book award given in partnership by EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) and the Graphic Novel Committee of the Children’s Book Council (CBC) to honor the outstanding achievements of authors and illustrators in youth graphic novels. Publishers are encouraged to submit titles for award consideration by March 9, 2018.

The SEE-IT Award was created in partnership by EBSCO (EBSCO eBooks™, H.W. Wilson Core Collections™ and NoveList®) and the CBC to recognize the cultural and literary impacts of youth graphic novels. Finalists for the 2018 SEE-IT Award will be announced in April 2018, and the winner will be announced in June 2018 at EBSCO’s School and Public Library Luncheon at ALA-Annual in New Orleans, Louisiana.

EBSCO Information Services Vice President of Book Strategy and Product Management, Ken Breen, says the SEE-IT Award was created to highlight and promote the positive influence that youth graphic novels have on young readers. “Last year we had a great response to the SEE-IT Award. We’ve seen the growth of youth graphic novels first-hand as a major provider of readers’ advisory services and book recommendations. The SEE-IT Award celebrates author and illustrator excellence in the genre, and allows us to provide recognition to graphic novels and share the positive impacts that graphic novels have on young readers.”

In 2017, the SEE-IT Award juror panel selected The Imitation Game: Alan Turing Decoded, by Jim Ottaviani and Leland Purvis, as the inaugural SEE-IT Award recipient. Published by ABRAMS, the graphic novel was selected for its use of creative storytelling, subject matter relevance and overall appeal. While members and employees of EBSCO and the CBC Graphic Novel Committee come together annually in collaboration to plan and organize the SEE-IT Award, they are not involved in the title selection.

The Children’s Book Council is the non-profit trade association of children’s book publishers in North America, and is dedicated to supporting the industry and promoting children’s books and reading. The CBC Graphic Novel Committee is committed to expanding the presence and legitimacy for children’s and young adult graphic novels.

Publishers interested in submitting nominees for the SEE-IT Award can do so by visiting the SEE-IT website at www.ebsco.com/see-it prior to the March 9, 2018 deadline.

OCLC and Internet Archive collaborate to expand library access to digital collections

Thu, 10/12/2017 - 13:43

DUBLIN, Ohio, 12 October 2017—OCLC and Internet Archive are working together to make the Archive’s collection of 2.5 million digitized books easier to find and access online and through local libraries.

OCLC will process metadata from the Internet Archive for its digital collection, matching to existing records in WorldCat, the world’s most comprehensive database of information about library collections, or adding a new record if one does not exist. The WorldCat record will include a link leading back to the Archive.org record. From there, searchers can examine or potentially borrow the related digital item.

Internet Archive will also add a link from its records to WorldCat.org, the online resource that makes it possible for searchers to quickly and easily find and access resources in libraries nearby--and worldwide.

“This work strengthens the Archive’s connection to the library community around the world. It advances our goal of universal access by making our collections much more widely discoverable. It will benefit library users around the globe by giving them the opportunity to borrow digital books that might not otherwise be available to them,” said Brewster Kahle, Founder and Digital Librarian of the Internet Archive. “We’re glad to partner with OCLC to make this possible and look forward to other opportunities this synchronization will present.”

"OCLC is always looking for opportunities to work with partners who share goals and objectives that can benefit libraries and library users,” said Chip Nilges, OCLC Vice President, Business Development. “We’re excited to be working with Internet Archive, and to make this valuable content discoverable through WorldCat. This partnership will add value to WorldCat, expand the collections of member libraries, and extend the reach of Internet Archive content to library users everywhere.”

WorldCat is a unique, global resource for finding items held in libraries of all types and sizes. It comprises more than 402 million records representing more than 2.5 billion holdings in libraries worldwide. Libraries cooperatively contribute, enhance and share bibliographic data through WorldCat, connecting people to cultural and scholarly resources in libraries. OCLC’s technology and team of expert catalogers and data quality specialists constantly enrich WorldCat records with new and corrected information to ensure that WorldCat contains the highest quality records possible. Data shared through WorldCat supports a variety of network services and spurs innovation.

About the Internet Archive
The Internet Archive (archive.org) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that was founded to build an Internet library, with the purpose of offering permanent access for researchers, historians, and scholars to historical collections that exist in digital format. Founded in 1996, the Internet Archive has an historical web collection (the Wayback Machine) of over 150 billion web pages, about 240,000 movies, over 500,000 audio items (including over 70,000 live concerts), over 1,800,000 texts, 1,600 education items, and over 30,000 software items.

About OCLC
OCLC is a nonprofit global library cooperative providing shared technology services, original research and community programs so that libraries can better fuel learning, research and innovation. Through OCLC, member libraries cooperatively produce and maintain WorldCat, the most comprehensive global network of data about library collections and services. Libraries gain efficiencies through OCLC’s WorldShare, a complete set of library management applications and services built on an open, cloud-based platform. It is through collaboration and sharing of the world’s collected knowledge that libraries can help people find answers they need to solve problems. Together as OCLC, member libraries, staff and partners make breakthroughs possible.

Backstage begins RFID tagging 1.9 million items for East Baton Rouge Parish Library

Fri, 10/06/2017 - 19:05

PROVO, Utah, October 6, 2017 –– Backstage Library Works (www.bslw.com) has begun production on a massive RFID tagging project for the East Baton Rouge Parish Library. The project is part of the library’s conversion to a unified RFID inventory system, which upon completion, will deliver greater accuracy in circulation and inventory while making library staff more available to patrons. Backstage will tag over 1.9 million barcoded items contained in fourteen library branches, one outreach services facility, and an external storage facility.

Backstage has designed a customized solution for the library system to ensure the project is organized and completed in a timely manner with minimal disruption to the library. A team of over a dozen technicians and a project manager will process the collection over a six-month period. The project plan includes schedules, tagging processes and placement guidelines, weeding standards, equipment testing methods, communication protocols, and quality control procedures.

John Reese, Vice President of On-Site Services for Backstage states:

“The East Baton Rouge RFID tagging project is one of our largest tagging projects to date. We are excited to work with the Library and get the process underway.”

Spencer Watts, Director of the East Baton Rouge Parish Library relays:

“Backstage is an experienced and knowledgeable partner, assisting us with a critical stage in our implementation of the library’s new RFID system. The tagging of our collection allows the library’s staff to remain free to concentrate on several ongoing construction projects and vital public service initiatives. Backstage’ s approach is highly professional and well organized.

“The tagging project is proceeding efficiently and with minimum disruption to library customers. We particularly appreciate the quality controls that are in place and the strong communication skills of the project manager and the entire Backstage organization.”
