Emerald signs agreement with Biblioteca do Conhecimento Online Consortium

United Kingdom, June 2009 – Emerald Group Publishing is pleased to announce a new consortium agreement in Portugal. Lisbon-based Biblioteca do Conhecimento Online (B-ON) has signed a deal with the publisher, giving B-ON’s 78 members the opportunity to subscribe to Emerald Management Xtra or Emerald Subject Collections at discount rates.

Seven institutions have already confirmed their subscriptions to Emerald online collections of journals through this agreement:

• Escola Superior de Turismo e Hotelaria do Estoril (Estoril)
• Universidade Catolica Portugesa (Porto)

OCLC and Kirtas Technologies partner to provide members and customers with access to digitized content

ROCHESTER, N.Y., JUNE 17, 2009 – Kirtas Technologies, the worldwide leader in bound-book digitization, and OCLC, a global online library service and research organization; have signed an agreement that will enable streamlined access to the ever-increasing numbers of digitized books to users of OCLC’s WorldCat and Kirtasbooks.com.

As part of the agreement, OCLC will now be able to provide its users with data indicating that a book is either available as digitized content or that it can be made available for digitization.

McGill University Library becomes first Canadian content provider to participate in Digitize on Demand and Kirtasbooks.com

McGill University Library is pleased to announce a partnership with Kirtas Technologies and its Canadian partner Ristech, which will allow students, faculty and the general public to request to have books digitized and made available through the new Digitize on Demand program. The announcement will be made publicly at the Canadian Library Association’s 2009 National Conference and Trade Show being held in Montreal May 29 to June 1.

Enumclaw Public Library To Install ITG’s Apex RFID System to Support Staff and Increase Efficiency

Norcross, Ga. – The Enumclaw Public Library (WA) has signed a contract with the Integrated Technology Group (ITG) to implement RFID technology to help boost efficiency and allow staff members to spend more time working one-on-one with its patrons.

The library currently maintains 50,000 items, circulates over 185,000 items annually, and has a patron base of about 12,000. ITG’s RFID technology will assist the library’s 12 staff members in their efforts to meet increasing patron needs for services. The system will also enhance the security of the library’s collection.

What do marmoset monkeys, jelly fish, humans, and Science Fiction have in common?
They all have the potential to glow green.
In a recent article in the Calgary Herald, scientists have taken the fluorescent gene found in jelly fish and spliced it with a marmoset monkey embryo; all for development in human medical breakthroughs. The result? A monkey that now glows green under a fluorescent light.
